farmer's fresh

It's been nearly 22 years to the day since the Czech Republic saw the fall of communism through the Velvet Revolution. In those 22 years since, Prague has been gradually emerging as a foodie's destination, slowly reversing the oppression that was set upon them.

The common misconception is that the food in the Czech Republic is all about goulash and dumplings and pork knuckles and whilst all the pubs in the country do serve this traditional fare and are quite good at it, there is much more to Prague than simply dumplings and goulash. It is the international influences that are starting to emerge within the country's food scene and are making the international food community sit up and take notice.

One example of this is La Veranda in Prague's Jewish quarter. Recommended in the 2011 Michelin Guide, and oozing with French influence, we headed out one night to see if it was worth the little red sticker.

The chefs and owners source all their ingredients from organically farmed small producers within the Czech Republic and this is clearly reflected in the quality of their food.

starter: a very generous portion of foie gras with
caramelised apples and masala sauce

starter: chef's tasting trio of foie gras, beef carpaccio &
duck terrine with bocconcini

main: scallops with baked polenta, mushroom tartare and
mushroom jus

main: quail stuffed with truffles & foie gras, black salsify,
croquettes and hazelnuts

We've sampled our fair share of restaurants since moving to Prague, some of which we will never return to, however I have a sinking suspicion that we will be seeing La Veranda very soon.

[Apologies for the dodgey pictures. We left the flat in a hurry and as a consequence the 'good' camera was left behind. I had to content with the iphone camera.]
